ALUMINUM Series 05 "DUO"

DUO is a frame that offers two sides: a simple "flat" surface and a "line" surface with a decorative band. Both sides are equipped with acrylic, allowing for a floating display of your artwork.

When displaying frames, we have noticed one recurring issue: the frame often tilts slightly forward, as if leaning away from the wall. We refer to this as "bowing."
(Note: The term "bowing" refers to the slight tilt of the frame away from the wall. In Japanese culture, "Ojigi" is a gesture of respect, and in this context, it symbolizes the frame slightly tilting as though showing respect.)

However, paintings and photographs displayed in museums stand perfectly upright, creating a dignified and graceful atmosphere that enhances the artwork.

We wanted to create a frame that would allow the artwork to be displayed in an ideal manner, without the frame bowing. With this goal in mind, we started the design of this product.

To eliminate the tilt, we reconsidered the positioning of the frame’s hanging mechanism in relation to the wall, moving the hanging mechanism from the "back" of the frame to the "edges."
This design ensures the frame remains vertical at all times, allowing the artwork to be displayed without casting shadows that could interfere with its presentation.

Additionally, by relocating the hanging and securing mechanisms to the edges, both sides of the frame can be used for display, offering different design options. The hardware is designed to be hidden within the frame, invisible from the front.

The frame was designed by a graphic designer with an architectural background, whose design approach seamlessly integrates the artwork with its surrounding space.

The frame is equipped with two ARAKAWA GRIP display hangers, widely used around the world, ensuring smooth display and exceptional quality.

In the case of using both sides with acrylic, it is recommended that the artwork thickness does not exceed 5mm. If thinner artwork is used, there may be a risk of the artwork falling or the acrylic becoming loose within the frame.

2019 GOOD DESIGN Award Winner

Since its release as an aluminum premium frame, "DUO" has been well-received by designers, photographers, contemporary artists, and other professionals. In 2022, it won the GOOD DESIGN Award. This marks the first such achievement in 30 years for an aluminum frame.

Furthermore, in 2020, it received the "Design For ASIA dFA Award 2020," earning high praise internationally.
