DUO is a frame that features a simple, "flat" surface and a "lined" surface decorated with ribbon-like patterns, allowing both sides to be used.
The Inspiration Behind DUO
One thing that has always bothered us when displaying picture frames is that they tend to lean slightly forward from the wall. We call this "Ojigi," a term derived from the Japanese custom of bowing as a gesture of respect. Just like a person slightly tilting forward when bowing, a traditional frame tends to lean away from the wall.
However, paintings and photographs displayed in museums stand perfectly vertical, creating a dignified atmosphere that enhances the elegance of the artwork.
We wanted to create a frame that could present artwork in an ideal way without "Ojigi." With this idea in mind, we began designing DUO.
To solve the tilting issue, we re-evaluated the relationship between the wall and the hanging fixtures. Instead of attaching the hanging fixtures to the "back" of the frame as is typically done, we moved them to the "sides."
As a result, the frame remains perfectly vertical at all times, eliminating unwanted shadows that could interfere with the artwork and providing an optimal display experience.
Additionally, relocating the fasteners and hanging fixtures from the back to the sides allows both surfaces to be used as display areas, each with a unique aesthetic.
The metal fittings are designed to be hidden within the frame, ensuring they are not visible from the front.
DUO was designed by a graphic designer with an architectural background, combining a functional approach with a design that blends seamlessly into any space while enhancing the presentation of the artwork.
